Opportunities for Change

Opportunities for Change Beyond completion of the Cascade Program, the Luke Center engages emerging leaders by providing opportunities for further education. Within several years of participating in the Cascade Program, participants will be likely candidates for the Pacific Program– the Luke Center’s highly successful executive leadership development program. It is a premise of the Cascade Program that the time between participation in the Cascade Program and Pacific Program is a period of critical growth in the Cascade Program graduate’s leadership development. During that period the Luke Center will provide additional learning opportunities and support.

Program Faculty and Curriculum

Following the successful model of the Pacific Program, the Cascade Program offers a mixture of technical and inspirational learning opportunities. These teach fundamental skills, but also focus on creating important insights into what effective leadership is within complex organizational and community environments, and important insights into one’s own skills and motivation.

The Cascade Program is taught as a lesson in catalytic leadership with class members introduced to the principles at the beginning of the program, and then having those principles infused throughout the program and summarized at the end.  The Executive Director of the Luke Center will cover the basics of catalytic leadership and will be the facilitator and leader of the program. The program includes three teaching modules on specific topic areas.  These are:

Discovering & Understanding Leadership Style

Jim Mathis, Executive Coach & Corporate Speaker

This module will focus on understanding one’s own personality style and how it shapes a leadership style. Emphasis will be given on understanding the differences between people working within the public realm and how to use one’s leadership style to positively interact with others and build lasting, effective relationships. This section will include administration of the DiSC personality profile.

Leadership Development

Louie Larimer, Attorney-At-Law and President of Land Visions LLC

The second module covers personal leadership issues identifying barriers to taking on positions of leadership and carrying through. It will deal with the leadership environment in diverse communities where the leader must inspire and motivate for a shared vision. It will focus on strategic thinking as a critical skill for leadership. Finally, it teaches issues surrounding influence and power, and how to build partnerships and alliances.

Authentic Leadership: It’s All About You – Managing Self ~ Leading Others

Sheila Sheinberg, President & CEO of the Center for Life Cycle Sciences

The last module builds on the prior learning focusing on practical application of leadership skills in actually leading. This includes managing one’s self and behavior as well as influencing and motivating others through leadership. Emphasis is given on the difficulty of leading through transformational change, and the need often to be the catalyst for that change.
